Advantages and Disadvantages of Hardwood Flooring

Deciding on what type of flooring you want to install you will need to weight the advantages and disadvantages.
Advantages
  • Easy to maintain.
  • Easy to clean because stains and dirt does not stick to it.
  • The color in the hardwood floor will remain the same for a long time.
  • Hardwood floors do not hold stuff that can aggravate allergies like carpet can.
  • Hardwood flooring has a lot of color or shades because they have different natural patterns.
  • No two hardwood floors are exactly alike.
  • Hardwood flooring is tough and strong.
  • Hardwood floors if you are tired of the color, you can sand and refinish them several times.
  • Hardwood floors will increase the value of your home and help the home to sell faster.
  • Hardwood floors can be used with any type of décor or style.
Disadvantages
  • Hardwood floors can be very expensive.
  • Most people have it professionally installed, so there is another added expense.
  • Hardwood floors are very time-consuming to install since they have to be laid one strip at a time.
  • Hardwood flooring over time will lose its shine so that means that you have to wax it using a special machine.
  • Hardwood flooring can become slippery, making it a little dangerous to walk in socks.
  • Hardwood flooring is very vulnerable to humidity and moisture.
  • Hardwood flooring can be noisy when wearing certain types of shoes.
If you can afford hardwood flooring, this would be the type of flooring to use.

Hardwood floor finishes

We use oil based stain or neutral sealer for the first coat, then there are a few options for the top or clear coats. Some of these are oil based urethane, water based urethane, oil based wax, Rubio Mono Coat, and Osmo oil. The pros and cons of each finish option will be covered in this blog, please check back periodically for more information that will help you choose the best floor finish for your floor and situation!
Oil-based urethane has a nice traditional look, and slightly ambers overtime, increasing that beauty.
Water-based finishes dry faster for light foot traffic but have the same curing time as oil base, about 7 to 10 days depending on humidity. Water-based finish also does not amber like oil base, which is important on light colors.
Scratches that inevitably happen, usually appear white on water based urethane, making them more noticeable especially on darker colored floors. Scratches are still noticeable on oil based urethane, but don't seem to stand out as much, especially when the sheen used is satin or matte.
Pier And Beam
Some older homes have the hardwood flooring installed directly on top of the floor joists. We can add a plywood subfloor and insulation under the wood floor, which makes the floor more solid feeling to walk on, keeps your floor from getting so cold in the winter months, and also helps with energy efficiency all year! We can also replace any rotted wood parts of your pier and beam foundation, and true up any low areas.

  • These guys had a fair price based on our bids and did an excellent job.

  • Burleson de Lago just refinished about 800 sq. ft of maple and mesquite floors for us, and we couldn't be happier. Dennis did most of the work, and he was very meticulous and professional. They look like the did when they were new, 22 years ago.

  • Fantastic company, professionals to the core. Aaron is patient, knowledgable and a great guy to boot. I would not hesitate to recommend this company to anyone with hardwood floors in need of refurbishment or a complete install.
